2. Baskett Electrical

From a modest 57m² corrugated unit in Martlesham Heath Business Park, just a few miles east of Ipswich, married couple Sam and Victoria Baskett have created a thriving firm.

Since 2019, the Basketts have amassed more than 150 five-star reviews, which Sam puts down to treating each job as special.

He said: "We pride ourselves on creating bespoke solutions to meet our customers' needs. We're proud to use the best quality materials, installed by our experts to a high standard."

The firm, which also installs EV chargers and offers air conditioner maintenance, tells customers: "Every system is carefully designed to match your property, energy goals, and budget."

Baskett Electrical also has its roots planted firmly in the community. Sam did his training at Suffolk New College, and the firm has sponsored local events like the 2026 Rotary Club of Felixstowe's charity beer and cider festival.

Baskett Electrical installed additional solar panels and a battery for me, keeping me informed throughout the process. When a scaffolding issue occurred, Charlotte resolved it promptly. I am very pleased with the service.

3. Greenscape Energy

Since it was founded in 2012, this Ipswich-based installer has left an indelible mark on the region.

The firm has installed "over 16,000 solar PV and battery storage systems for homes and businesses", with an impressive current installation rate of 65 systems per week.

One of these systems was fitted on the roof of mental health charity Suffolk Mind, as a donation. In 2026, the charity reported: "The solar panels have made a big difference already, saving us more than £1,150 in energy bills in their first year."

These savings, Suffolk Mind said, "could mean we're able to offer more than 20 free life changing counselling sessions to people who need them."

You can visit Greenscape Energy at its Suffolk showroom, which sets it apart from many installers. Its three warehouses are also open to the public, and it's partnered with Suffolk New College to run a training facility for renewable installers.

The company also partnered with energy giant OVO in 2025, which should help Greenscape Energy to achieve its goal of being “the customer’s most trusted partner on their journey towards a sustainable future.”

Greenscape Energy have installed solar panels and an ASHP for my home in the last five years. Their staff are always helpful and friendly especially if I require further advice and guidance, nothing is too much trouble for them.

A typical solar & battery system costs £11,958 in Suffolk, on average.

This system includes 11 solar panels, each of which have a 450-watt peak power rating. Overall, this gives you a 4.95kWp system.

We've factored in the approximate cost of installing a 10kWh solar battery, because it can massively increase your returns.

A battery lets you use more solar electricity at home – known as self-consumption – which means you can buy less electricity from the grid.

You can also earn money by signing up to one of the best export tariffs and time-of-use import tariffs, and by joining any of the increasingly profitable virtual power plants sweeping the country.

About 94% of new solar panel installations in the UK include a battery, according to data from Flexi-Orb and the EPVS.

There are many reasons why you may end up paying a different amount for your solar panel system, such as its size, the job’s complexity, and which installer you hire.

To find out everything else you need to know, read our guide to solar panel costs.

Are there any grants for solar panels in Suffolk?

There's one local grant that you can access in the county, though only if you live in Mid Suffolk.

Other households may be able to get a low-interest solar loan through the Warm Homes Suffolk Loan scheme, and if you're eligible, you can use the same government grants that are available across the country.

You could potentially get free solar panels through the Warm Homes: Local Grant or Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, though ECO4 is set to end in December 2026.

Mid Suffolk Cosy Homes

If you live in Mid Suffolk, you may be able to get measures like insulation and solar panels through this council-run scheme.

You'll receive a free retrofit assessment, which will determine which improvements would benefit your home. If you decide to proceed with any of these measures, the council will cover up to £10,000 of the installation costs.

The initiative is open to homeowners, private renters, and landlords who own fewer than five properties in the district. To qualify, you must have an annual household income under £80,000, with less than £40,000 in savings.

Your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating also has to be D or below, and your Council Tax band must be between A and E.

The programme, which the council launched in 2023, aims to make the district's households warmer, more economical to heat, and more environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, it's limited to Mid Suffolk.

Warm Homes Suffolk Loan scheme

Suffolk County Council runs Warm Homes Suffolk, which has partnered with not-for-profit lender Lendology to supply homeowners with low-interest loans for a range of measures – including solar panels.

This isn't a grant, but it does allow homeowners to borrow up to £15,000, and take up to seven years to pay it back. You'll need enough equity in your home to cover the agreed loan, and to pass Lendology's credit and affordability checks.

You'll also have to provide Suffolk County Council with two quotes for each measure, proof of planning permission if necessary, and evidence that your installer is accredited by TrustMark, MCS, or another similar body.

The current Representative Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is 2.2%. Your interest rate will be fixed, and you'll be able to make early repayments or overpayments at any point, for free.

These loans are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, and the last time the scheme ran, it was so popular that it ran out of funding. So if you want to apply, make sure you do it in time.

For more general information, check out our article on solar panel loans.

Solar Together Suffolk

Households in Suffolk can occasionally sign up for Solar Together, an initiative that allows homeowners and small businesses to get a discounted solar installation through the power of collective buying.

It's not a government grant, though: it's a scheme created by private Dutch company iChoosr, which operates in partnership with local authorities in England.

In London, it secured 20-30% discounts for households, according to the Greater London Authority.

More than 3,000 Suffolk homes have switched to solar through the scheme, which first ran in the county in 2018.

Solar Together only visits a few counties each year, and every project is time-limited, so you’ll have to wait to see if it comes back to Suffolk – though it usually does once per year.

Unfortunately, the scheme also comes with some significant downsides, so it's worth doing your research before moving ahead. To learn more, read our comprehensive guide to Solar Together.

National grants

There are a couple of national grants that Suffolk households can apply for – and if you might qualify, it's worth taking a closer look.

Solar panels can cut your electricity bills by hundreds of pounds every year, lower your emissions, and increase your property’s value, but the upfront cost is usually high. Grants can lower or wipe out this fee completely.

To find out which schemes you could be eligible for, use our grant eligibility checker.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)

ECO4 is the government’s flagship scheme for reducing residential emissions. If you live in a low-income or vulnerable household with someone who receives a qualifying benefit, you may be able to get some free measures.

Unfortunately, the scheme is set to end in December 2026.

Until that point, the government will keep compelling large energy suppliers to make energy-efficient upgrades in deprived homes across Britain, at no cost to residents.

ECO4 can provide you with a free solar panel system, as it has done for more than 66,000 households – but only if your home is heated with electricity, as 11.2% of households in England are.

To learn more, check out our full guide to the ECO4 scheme.

Warm Homes: Local Grant

This government scheme provides funding to local authorities in England that they can use to upgrade the energy efficiency and heating systems of eligible households.

The scheme, which started in April 2025 and is set to run until 2028, is intended to help energy-inefficient households that are deprived, low-income, or get a means-tested benefit.

In its latest funding round, the programme awarded £6.2 million to a consortium that included every council in Suffolk.

So if you qualify and live anywhere in the county, you could secure up to £30,000 worth of measures.

This includes £15,000 for energy performance upgrades like a solar & battery system, and another £15,000 for a low-carbon heating system, such as a heat pump or electric storage heaters.

How many homes in Suffolk have solar panels?

37,233 homes in Suffolk have had solar panel systems installed, according to the latest government data.

This means 11.2% of the county's 333,543 households have switched to solar – which is much higher than the UK average of 6%.

To find out more about the popularity of solar panels in different parts of the country, check out our guide to how many homes have solar panels in the UK.

Is Suffolk sunny enough for solar panels?

Suffolk is definitely sunny enough for solar panels. In fact, it enjoys more sunlight than most of the UK, receiving 1,305 kilowatt-hours per square metre (kWh/m²) per year – 18% higher than the national average.

This number will change a bit depending on where in Suffolk you live, but it’s an extremely encouraging indicator.

In the solar industry, amounts of sunlight are tracked via ‘solar irradiance,’ which measures the sun’s average intensity in a specific area.

It’s recorded in kilowatt-hours per square metre – meaning how much energy makes it from the sun, through 93 million miles of space, to a certain square metre on Earth.

As you might expect, the more intense the sunlight that hits your panels, the higher the kWh/m², and the more solar electricity your system will produce – which means higher savings for your household.

These estimates are all based on a home with solar panels in Stowmarket, which is roughly the centre of Suffolk.

We've used a 4.95kWp system because it should produce more than enough electricity to match the average UK household's electricity consumption, which is 3,400kWh per year, and because it was the average system size in 2025, according to the MCS.

Whenever your solar panels generate more electricity than you can use or store in your battery, you can sell this excess energy to the grid via one of the best SEG rates.

While almost all UK systems do this during summer, households in Suffolk should benefit from this additional income stream more often.

Please note: you won’t necessarily produce as much solar electricity with your system, since your home will have its own unique characteristics – but this should give you a good idea of what’s possible in Suffolk.

How many solar panels do I need in Suffolk?

There's no ideal number of solar panels for a home in any area, but it usually makes sense to get as many as you can fit on your roof.

Solar panels are cheap compared to large, fixed installation costs like scaffolding and labour, and each extra panel adds to your output – and therefore boosts your savings.

However, it's still worth considering how many panels you'd need to generate as much electricity as you use.

The average Suffolk home consumes 3,868kWh per year, based on our analysis of the latest government data – which is 13.8% higher than the UK average of 3,400kWh.

If you want a system that'll generate at least this much electricity in typical Suffolk irradiance and on a south-facing roof, you’ll need nine panels, each with a 450W peak power rating.

An east- or west-facing system would require 11 of these panels.

To learn more, check out our guide to how many solar panels you need.

Connecting solar panels to the grid in Suffolk

To get your solar panels connected to the grid, your installer must contact your Distribution Network Operator (DNO), which in Suffolk is UK Power Networks (UKPN).

Like all DNOs, UKPN runs the hardware that supplies an area of the UK with electricity, so it has to know how much energy is flowing in and out of the grid.

If your inverter’s capacity is 3.68kW or under, your installer can simply notify your DNO after they've connected your system to the grid, with a G98 application.

As long as they're filled in correctly, G98s are just a formality, which is why these installations are often called 'connect and notify'.

If you have a bigger system, your inverter's capacity may be over 3.68kW. Your installer would then ask your DNO for permission to use the inverter's maximum capacity, with a G99 application.

Only when this submission has been approved – which most are – can you sell all of your excess electricity to the grid, and maximise your returns from the system.

Exporting your electricity is one of the biggest financial benefits of going solar, as it can earn a typical home £675 per year on the current best tariff combination.

Planning permission for solar panels in Suffolk

The majority of households in Suffolk don't need planning permission to get solar panels, which is also true for the UK as a whole.

This is due to permitted development rights, which let homeowners make reasonable changes to their property without asking for planning permission.

You're even allowed to get solar panels installed in a conservation area without permission in most cases.

In some conservation areas however, the local authority applies an Article 4 Direction (A4D) on building works, which can curtail or remove its residents’ permitted development rights.

There are currently 146 active conservation areas in Suffolk, according to the government's most recent data.

And there are seven A4Ds in the county, ranging from those that affect a street or two, to another that covers large parts of Ipswich.

An A4D won't necessarily stop you from making changes to your home, but you may have to get planning permission. If this is required, you'll have to explain that your solar panels won't take away from the area's special character.

Is it worth getting solar panels in Suffolk?

It’s absolutely worth getting solar panels in Suffolk – even more so than it is in most of the UK.

Suffolk experiences high levels of solar irradiance, particularly compared to the national average, which means its residents can save hundreds of pounds per year by going solar.

There’s a reason why 11.2% of Suffolk's households have already made the switch – and that percentage will likely rise in the coming years, as energy bills stay high, and heat pumps and electric vehicles become even more widespread across the country.

If you’d like to go solar but you’re put off by the upfront cost, consider Sunsave Plus. You can make monthly payments on a term length of your choice, own your system from day one, and pay it off (in full or in part) with no penalties – whenever you like.

And whichever package you choose, all Sunsave systems come with long product warranties and insurance-backed workmanship guarantees.
