The government has launched the Warm Homes Loan Scheme to provide cheaper loans for home energy tech – and we're an approved lender on the scheme and a certified installer.

Energy bills have been high for years, and are expected to rise even further in January 2027. Tech like solar panels, batteries, and EV chargers can save households hundreds of pounds per year, but their upfront costs are high.

This scheme helps make them more affordable – and with Sunsave, you can get a low or zero-interest loan, choose the length of the contract, and pay it off (in full or in part) whenever you like, with no penalties.

The government is lowering the cost of borrowing

Here's how the scheme works: firstly, the government gives approved lenders a grant for each loan they hand out.

This grant is worth up to 20% of the loan. The lender must then use this money to lower the interest rate on the loan.

So it's just like a normal loan – only cheaper. In this way, the government makes it more affordable for households to get home energy tech.

The aim is to take up to five percentage points off each loan's interest rate – so a loan that would've previously come with an 8% interest rate could now have a 3% rate.

You'll also see some shorter loans' interest rates fall to 0%, though the minimum loan length is three years.

The scheme is part of the government's £15 billion Warm Homes Plan, which aims to put solar panels onto three million more homes by 2030.

For more information, read our full guide to the scheme.

Energy is an everyday essential that must be affordable for everyone. These government-supported loans will help families across the UK upgrade their homes with no upfront costs to make them warmer and cheaper to run.

You can get a low or zero-interest loan from us

Since we're an approved lender on the scheme and a certified installer, you can get a low or zero-interest loan from us – and we'll carry out your installation.

This means you'll only have to deal with one company, from your quote to your final payment, which should create a much smoother process for you.

We provide loans that cover either solar panels, a home battery, or both.

The scheme imposes a £15,000 limit on solar panel loans, and another £15,000 cap on home battery loans – but that should be more than enough for most households.

A typical 4.9 kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar panel system in the UK costs around £8,000, and a 10kWh battery is priced at about £4,000. To learn more, read our guide to solar panel costs.

And if you already have a system, you can use the scheme to add a battery or more panels.

You'll own your system from day one and start saving straight away – and we provide every Sunsave system with long-term protection.

High upfront costs are the biggest barrier to adoption of home energy tech like solar and batteries, which are among the most effective ways to cut household energy bills. When we made it easy to get low-carbon tech with nothing to pay upfront, homeowners responded with huge interest. But for many, the cost of borrowing was still too high. This scheme tackles that head on, allowing us to offer low or zero-interest finance that puts one of the most effective ways to cut energy bills within reach of almost every UK homeowner.

You choose how long you have to pay

With Sunsave, you can choose a loan term of 3, 10, or 20 years. This allows you to balance how much you want to pay monthly with your overall cost.

If you opt for a shorter-term loan, your monthly payments will be higher, but you'll pay less in interest.

And if you choose a longer term, your overall costs will be higher, due to the interest payments – but you'll pay a lower amount every month, which could mean your energy bill savings are greater than your monthly payments – so you make a net saving from day one.

Since the government has capped grants at 20% of the loan amount, it's not always possible to cut a full five percentage points off your interest rate on a longer-term loan.

You can also pay off your loan early (in full or in part) for free, with no penalties – whenever you like.

Who can get one?

You may be able to qualify if you own and live in the home you want to upgrade, or if you’re its private landlord.

You'll also need to pass our standard credit and affordability checks, as with any loan.

There are no extra eligibility criteria, meaning that unlike some solar panel grants, you don't have to be a benefit recipient or live in an energy-inefficient property to qualify.

The scheme covers the whole of the UK, but we can only hand out loans in areas where we also install. We currently cover all of England and Wales, and the south of Scotland.

It's simple to apply

To apply via Sunsave, just take these quick steps:

  1. Tell us about your home – we'll design a system and give you a quote
  2. Go through a quick eligibility check – we'll check you're eligible, and that it's affordable
  3. Sign your loan agreement, plus a short government declaration
  4. Agree an installation date, and watch our MCS-certified team install your system
  5. Start saving on your bills

We've made the process as simple as possible, helped by the fact that we'll be your lender and installer.

Signing the government declaration confirms that you won't get two public grants for the same equipment (unless permitted), and that you're not using the loan to replace an existing renewable system.

It also allows the government to send someone to inspect your installation, as an anti-fraud measure. They'll always ask for your permission to visit.

You'll have long-term protection

Whichever package you pick, all Sunsave systems come with long product warranties and insurance-backed workmanship guarantees.

And if you choose Solar & Battery Plus on the 20-year term, you'll get the Solar & Battery Guarantee, which comes with free out-of-warranty replacements, 24/7 monitoring, downtime credit, and all repairs included.

Your system will be insured by Aviva against damage, fire, and theft.

The scheme also requires your installer and system to be MCS-certified, which should ensure that your equipment is safe, works as it should, and is built to last.

Is a Warm Homes loan right for you?

If you want to get solar panels, a battery, or both, but you're put off by the upfront cost or the price of borrowing, the Warm Homes Loan Scheme could be a great solution.

With Sunsave, you can get a low-interest loan over 3, 10, or 20 years, with long-term protection and the ability to pay it off early (in full or in part) for free, with no penalties – whenever you want.

The government intends to provide up to £300 million of funding, but with grants handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, it's unclear how long the scheme will be around.
