2. Greener Energy Northwest

This business may be registered in London, but the moment you talk to Liverpudlian owner Chris Smith, you’ll see that for the bureaucratic technicality it is.

Chris, who also provides central heating and plumbing services as a Gas Safe-registered engineer, has clocked up more than 25 years as a tradesperson.

His company has served households all over Liverpool since 2020, with customers complimenting the team’s hard work, professionalism, and cleanliness.

On his Checkatrade page, Chris has written: “I am a perfectionist and take pride in everything I do. I won't be beaten on quality and price. You will not regret choosing me.”

Considering his impressively high Checkatrade rating, it seems like he’s right.

Chris arrived on time. He carried out the work efficiently and professionally. He gave us advice and left the workspace clean and tidy. Would highly recommend. Very competitively priced.

3. Conscious Energy

Since launching in 2019, Conscious Energy’s team has grown to more than a dozen, and has attracted a consistent stream of sterling reviews.

Customers have praised staff for being attentive, polite, and helpful, and the company’s ethos is similarly positive: “Our goal is to drive the UK towards a greener future while saving our customers money.

“Our mission is to educate customers about global warming, greenhouse gas health effects, and clean alternatives to harmful energy sources.”

This clear vision may explain the firm’s success, which has allowed its owners to launch a new related business – Conscious Roofing – in August 2025.

Conscious Energy is trusted enough in the local community to be tasked with putting solar installations on all sorts of buildings, from a Kids in Bloom nursery to an engineering firm and the Royal Court Theatre – plus loads of homes.

The registered address is on Penny Lane, near the barber’s featured in the song – but that’s just because the company’s accountants have their office there. The firm’s office is actually on an industrial estate to the south east.

We had this company out to do our new heat pump, solar panels, and radiators. Quick service, very friendly team. Cleaned up after themselves and were very patient with my disabilities. Cameron, Alfie and Lewis were extremely pleasant and efficient, and I would with out a doubt recommend this company. Thank you for your brilliant service, you prioritised us and did exactly what you said you would do.

4. GGRS Energie

This St. Helens-based company is part of the Kelly Group, which installed the UK’s first customer cable TV service in 1985, and has expanded into creating internet, gas, and EV charger networks, among others.

GGRS Energie launched in 2020 to access the solar market, and it’s been a roaring success so far.

The installer currently fits JA Solar panels and batteries made by the likes of SolaX Power, Greenlinx, and Zonergy – and according to dozens of sparkling reviews, does so in a quick, efficient, knowledgeable manner.

And despite being part of a London-based corporation, GGRS is clearly connected to the local community.

In 2023, the firm raised ÂŁ2,500 for The Owen McVeigh Foundation, which provides free holidays to children with cancer in the Merseyside area.

It takes people’s needs seriously, writing on its website: “We're committed to not just installing solar panels, but providing an exceptional experience every step of the way. Customer satisfaction is our top priority.”

Found GGRS online and so glad I did. Very professional right from the first phone call. Job completed system up and running to full potential - happy days. Would highly recommend this company.

It may be cold, but Liverpool receives more daylight than the UK average

How much do solar panels cost in Liverpool?

Property size Annual electricity usage (kWh)* System size (kWp) Number of panels (450W) Estimated cost** Estimated cost with 5kWh battery†
1 bedroom 1,800 2.25 5 ÂŁ3,577 ÂŁ6,577
2-3 bedrooms 2,700 4.5 10 ÂŁ7,154 ÂŁ10,154
4-5 bedrooms 4,100 6.75 15 ÂŁ10,732 ÂŁ13,732

It costs ÂŁ7,154 to buy a 4.5 kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar panel system and get it installed in Liverpool, on average, according to MCS data.

The price you pay may well be different though, depending on factors including the system’s size, the complexity of the installation, the installer you choose, and where you are in Liverpool.

We've also shown approximately how much it costs to add a 5kWh battery to your installation, because this can massively increase your solar savings.

A battery allows you to use more of the electricity your panels generate, reduce the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid, and cut your energy bills.

It opens up new possibilities too, like signing up to one of the best export tariffs on the market, taking advantage of a time-of-use import tariff that lets you buy electricity for a cheaper, off-peak rate, and joining grid flexibility services like virtual power plants.

Because of these significant benefits, around 94% of new solar panel installations across the UK include a battery, according to data from Flexi-Orb and the Energy Performance Validation Scheme (EPVS).

Are there any grants for solar panels in Liverpool?

There’s only one local scheme that can make solar panels cheaper for Liverpool residents.

There are also a couple of national grants, but these come with stringent criteria, as they’re intended to help the most underprivileged, energy-inefficient households in the country.

Solar Together Liverpool

Solar Together wields the power of collective buying to negotiate cheaper prices for residents and business owners in a certain area who sign up to go solar.

The scheme, run by Dutch company iChoosr, has secured 30-35% discounts on the standard rate in Essex and Bristol – and it’s brought a similar level of success in Liverpool over its three rounds in the area.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA) reported that “the group Installation of a typical 14-panel solar array was more than a third cheaper than the typical market price during the third round of the Solar Together programme.”

In three visits to Liverpool, Solar Together has arranged for 10,376 solar panels to be installed on 1,053 households.

The LCRCA, which brings together councils from Halton, Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, St. Helens, and Wirral, is such a big fan that it organised a fourth round of Solar Together in October and November 2025.

You can sign up to Solar Together if you’re a homeowner, a small or medium-sized business owner, or a tenant – as long as your landlord has given you permission.

It moves around England and Wales, running in different areas for limited stretches of time, so watch out for when it comes back to Liverpool.

National grants

Households in Liverpool can take advantage of a couple of national solar panel grants, which we’ve run through in detail below.

However, these schemes are intended to help out low-income, deprived, and vulnerable households, so most people won’t qualify.

To find out which grants you could be eligible for, use our grant eligibility checker.

ECO4

This UK government scheme obliges large energy suppliers to help low-income households, vulnerable people, and anyone who receives benefits by paying for energy-efficient home improvements.

If you’re eligible, you could get a free solar panel system through the initiative, though only if electricity powers your heating system, which is the case for just 10.9% of homes in England.

You must be a homeowner or private renter, and receive at least one eligible benefit – unless you live in energy-inefficient social housing, which may be enough for you to qualify on its own.

You might also be able to access ECO4 funding if your annual household income is lower than a specific level, or if a cold home would make your health conditions worse.

To learn more, check out our guide to ECO4.

Warm Homes: Local Grant

The Warm Homes: Local Grant (WH:LG) is a UK government grant that’s replaced the Home Upgrade Grant and Local Authority Delivery scheme.

Its first round of funding, announced in March 2025, has awarded ÂŁ31.8 million of funding to the LCRCA.

Liverpool’s councils must use this money to boost the energy efficiency and heating systems of energy-inefficient households which are deprived, low-income, or get a means-tested benefit.

Eligible homes can receive up to £30,000 in funding – £15,000 for energy performance upgrades like solar & battery installations, and £15,000 for low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps.

You can’t apply for the grant yourself, though. If your local authority thinks your home might meet the grant's eligibility criteria, a representative will contact you.

How many homes in Liverpool have solar panels?

26,376 homes in Liverpool have solar panels, according to government data from September 2025.

That means around 4.4% of the area’s roughly 600,000 households have made the switch.

While that’s slightly below the UK average of 5.5%, it’s higher than the 1.7% of London homes, 2.7% of Birmingham households, and 3.8% of Manchester homes that have got solar panels.

Considering they tend to enjoy less daylight than people in most UK cities, Liverpudlians seem to have discovered that going solar can cut your energy bills – even when the weather is less than ideal.

Is Liverpool sunny enough for solar panels?

Liverpool is certainly sunny enough for solar panels.

When it comes to ‘solar irradiance’ – a term for the sun’s intensity in a specific area – the home of Billy Fury and Frankie Goes to Hollywood receives more sunlight than most places in the UK.

Solar irradiance is the amount of energy that gets from the sun to a particular spot on Earth, and is measured in kilowatt-hours per square metre.

The higher the solar irradiance is in your area, the more daylight your panels can turn into electricity, and the more you’ll save on your energy bills.

Dunsop Bridge, a village in Lancashire that the Ordnance Survey has declared the geographic centre of Britain, gets around 850kWh per m².

This is according to the European Commission's Photovoltaic Geographical Information System (PVGIS), which continually updates its solar irradiance data.

You’ll get around 4.7% more in Liverpool – partly because it’s south of Dunsop Bridge – putting you in an excellent position to substantially cut your electricity bills with solar.

Advances in solar and battery technology have made going solar worthwhile across the UK, even in places that get lower than average amounts of daylight – but Liverpudlians don’t have to worry about that.

Typical solar panel output in Liverpool

A 4.6kWp solar panel system will produce 3,524kWh of electricity per year in Liverpool, according to the European Commission’s PVGIS tool.

That should be more than enough to power most of your annual electricity consumption with solar energy, as the average UK household uses 3,400kWh per year.

We’ve used a 4.6kWp array as it was the average UK system size in 2024, according to the MCS, and we chose a 35° roof as it’s a standard angle for UK roofs.

Our calculations are also based on the system facing west, so if you have a south-facing roof, you could generate even more solar electricity – 4,439kWh, to be exact.

These figures show how productive solar panel systems can be in Liverpool these days, thanks to technological advances.

Your output won’t be the same all year round – in fact, your panels will usually generate more electricity than you need in summer. If you sign up to a solar export tariff, you can make money by selling all of this excess energy to the grid.

This will give you a financial buffer during winter, when your panels will produce less electricity and you’ll have to rely more on the grid.

Is it worth getting solar panels in Liverpool?

It’s definitely worth getting solar panels in Liverpool, even if the area is often wet and cloudy.

Irradiance levels in this cultural hotbed are higher than the UK average, meaning a solar panel system can produce more than enough electricity for you to make a fantastic return on your investment.

You can save hundreds of pounds per year by switching to solar, which is probably why tens of thousands of homes in Liverpool have already made the move.

If the upfront cost’s too high for you, you might be able to get a free solar & battery system through ECO4 or WH:LG, but most households won’t qualify.

If you’re in that category, it’s worth looking at Sunsave Plus, our all-in-one, bespoke residential solar and battery solution that’s delivered as a monthly subscription with no upfront cost.

Every system comes with the Sunsave Guarantee, which provides you with 24/7 monitoring, maintenance, a free battery upgrade, a free replacement inverter (if needed), and downtime cover.

Your system will also be insured by Aviva against damage, fire, and theft.
