There are now well over a dozen tariffs which use low off-peak rates to entice electric vehicle drivers, but EDF has been in the game for longer than most.
The supplier launched its EV tariff in 2019, and now provides seven hours of electricity per day for just 6.99p per kilowatt-hour (kWh) – the longest, cheapest off-peak period around.
In this guide, we'll run through how EDF GoElectric works, what kind of savings you can expect, and why households with a battery are best-placed to profit from it.

What is EDF GoElectric?
EDF GoElectric is a fixed time-of-use tariff that’s open to any household with an electric vehicle and smart meter.
On this tariff, you can charge your car and power your home for 6.99p per kWh between 11pm and 6am – meaning you can power the average EV battery of 73.2kWh for just £5.12.
When you're not using the off-peak rate, you'll pay roughly 33.14p per kWh, depending on where in the country you live.
This is significantly higher than the July 2026 price cap's rate, so you'll need to shift the majority of your electricity usage to off-peak times – or charge your home battery, if you have one – to maximise your savings.
Charging your EV exclusively during off-peak hours is a great start, and should save you hundreds of pounds per year.
And for every kWh you use on this tariff, EDF will send a kWh of zero-carbon electricity to the national grid from its nuclear power plants. This is an increasingly common – and welcome – approach from energy suppliers.

How does it work?
Once you're signed up to EDF GoElectric, you'll have fixed off-peak and peak prices for 12 months.
Your smart meter will record all your usage and send it to EDF, which will charge you the off-peak rate for any electricity consumed between 11pm and 6am.
Outside of these times, you'll pay the peak rate for any electricity you use – that is, unless you sign up to EDF Smart Charging. This add-on gives you a fixed monthly payment and extra off-peak hours in exchange for you giving up control of your charger to EDF.
Your car will still be charged, since you can use your app to tell EDF how much charge you want and when you need it by, and you'll pay the off-peak rate for any electricity it consumes.
And EDF will be able to buy power for less when the wholesale price drops – for instance, when supply is high due to wind and solar farms producing a lot of electricity. Currently, the supplier will pay you £5 per month for the privilege.
Your 11pm-6am off-peak period will be unaffected – and when Smart Charging periods are active, the off-peak rate will also be active for the rest of your home.
Not all cars or chargers are compatible with Smart Charging, however. Currently, EDF accepts 11 car brands and eight manufacturers' chargers.

Between 11pm and 6am every day, all electricity you buy from the grid will cost 6.99p per kWh.
That gives you 49 hours of low-cost electricity every week, which you can use to charge your car, run energy-intensive appliances like your washing machine, and fill your home battery if you have one.
At all other times – so from 6am to 11pm – any electricity you import will be charged at the peak rate, which is about 33.14p per kWh.
This rate will differ depending on your location, as will your standing charge, which is around 53.94p per day.
And if you sign up for the Smart Charging bolt-on, you'll reduce your electricity bills by a further £60 per year.
However, if you leave EDF more than 49 days before the end of your 12-month contract, you'll have to pay a £75 exit fee.
EDF GoElectric offers one of the best off-peak rates in the UK – and for longer than any other EV tariff – but with one of the highest standing charges around. It's one of the top EV tariffs on the market, but is slightly hamstrung by this unavoidable fee.
As a result, tariffs like E.ON Next Drive Smart and Ecotricity Smart 1 Year Fixed Green Electricity EV are better for a typical home, despite offering worse off-peak rates.

How much can you save with EDF GoElectric?
You can save £659 with EDF GoElectric, compared to the July 2026 price cap.
We're basing that on a household that exclusively uses the tariff's off-peak rate to charge its EV with enough electricity to drive 7,100 miles per year, which is the national average.
We've also conservatively estimated that the home will use the off-peak rate to power 30% of its other electricity consumption, which we've set at 3,400kWh as that's also the national average.
If you can shift more of your usage into the 11pm-6am period, you could boost these savings. We recommend scheduling appliances like dishwashers and washing machines for these off-peak times, if you can.
This process would be easier with a battery, as we'll explain below.
With just an EV
The average driver can save £411 per year by just using EDF GoElectric's off-peak rate.
On the July 2026 price cap, you'd pay £561 to charge your car at home, whereas on EDF GoElectric, you can pay just £150.
We've based our calculations on a driver using 2,148kWh, which is enough electricity to power the average EV for 7,100 miles.
And since the off-peak period lasts seven hours every day, the vast majority of drivers should be able to stick to cheap charging with no problem.
After all, a standard 7kW charger can draw 49kWh from the grid in this time, which can charge 67% of the average battery's 73.2kWh of usable capacity. This is enough to power your EV for 162 miles – more than the 137 miles that the average driver covers in a week.
And if you charged your car every day on EDF GoElectric's off-peak rate, you'd be able to travel around 59,000 miles per year – seven times more than the average driver.
This all means that if you charge your car for around six hours per week, that should be enough – and if you're going on a long journey, just set your EV to charge a couple nights in a row.
If you're using a standard three-pin socket instead of a dedicated EV charger, the process will be roughly three times as slow, and you'll need to plug in your car for about 18 hours per week.
With an EV and home battery
You can fully charge a home battery during this tariff's off-peak period, then use that electricity in your home for the rest of the day.
If you're able to power 100% of your consumption in this way – by using your battery to constantly run your household on EDF GoElectric's off-peak rate – you could save an additional £650 per year.
A 10kWh battery can import enough electricity to cover the average home's 3,400kWh of annual consumption, though what size battery you should get also depends on your household's usage patterns.
Eligibility requirements for EDF GoElectric
To sign up for EDF GoElectric, you need to have an electric vehicle and a smart meter.
If you don't have a smart meter, you can ask your energy supplier to install one for free.
You'll also have to pay by Direct Debit, and you can't sign up for a different company's flexibility service – which basically means you can't join another virtual power plant (VPP).
This is standard, as you can only ever be on one VPP at a time.
These initiatives – which include EDF GoElectric – bring together smart tech owners like EV drivers, battery owners, and solar homes into one group, which a company then uses to buy and sell electricity to the grid.
This allows households to engage in energy trading on a much bigger scale than they can alone. In terms of EDF GoElectric, customers and the supplier can benefit from buying electricity when it's cheap.
How to sign up for EDF GoElectric
You can sign up online for EDF GoElectric.
If you're not already with EDF, you'll first be moved onto the supplier's standard variable tariff after providing standard information like your address, contact details, and bank details.
As long as your smart meter functions properly and communicates with EDF's hardware, the switch should be seamless.
And if you're currently signed up to an EDF electricity tariff, it should just be a matter of pressing a few buttons online.
How long does it take?
EDF says new customers should only spend two to three days on its standard variable tariff before being moved to GoElectric.
However, the supplier has also warned that if there are issues around your smart meter or EDF's ability to connect with it, the switch can take "up to 28 days from the date we take over your supply."
If you're already with EDF, the switch should be faster, though customers have generally reported it taking a few days.
Is EDF GoElectric worth it?
EDF GoElectric is certainly worth it, even though there may be better options for you, depending on how you use the tariff.
Its 6.99p per kWh off-peak rate is the lowest on the market – so if you have a home battery, you can save hundreds of pounds per year by charging it overnight, then powering your home with cheap electricity.
This rate lasts for seven hours too, making it the longest off-peak period around. This gives you ample time to charge your car and home battery, run your dishwasher, and schedule a load of laundry.
However, if you don't have a battery, you'll have to use GoElectric's peak rate for most of the day – and it's one of the most expensive among EV tariffs, having risen sharply in July 2026.
Its standing charge is also above average for EV tariffs, while its £75 exit fee is steep.
So for households that have a battery as well as an EV, EDF GoElectric may well be the best option, thanks to its excellent off-peak period. Other homes may want to look elsewhere.
